Injured athletes live extraordinary lives
Denver area quadriplegics are featured in upcoming film, play wheelchair rugby

Denver-Anyone who believes that being in a wheelchair means you cannot live an exciting life has not met Jason Regier or Chance Sumner. These men are members of the Denver Harlequins Wheelchair Ruby team, the 2005 Team USA Wheelchair Rugby, they are both featured in the upcoming film, "The Goal," and both men are quadriplegics.

Regier sustained a spinal cord injury in a car accident in 1996. He has been playing wheelchair rugby since 1997. "This is an amazing opportunity I have been given. The existence of this sport and the incentive to play and to play well was life changing," said Regier.

"This game is everything to me," said Sumner. He suffered a spinal cord injury after be thrown from a mechanical bull in 2002.

Team USA has just completed their first training camp and will endure one more before they face teams from all over the world at the World Wheelchair games in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. This is a high performance team with a lot of competition to overcome just to be chosen. Team members must pay their own way, due to a lack of funding which creates another obstacle to overcome.

Darla Rae, executive producer, writer, director of "The Goal," met these amazing athletes while serving as a board member for the Denver Harlequins. These men and other wheelchair rugby players inspired her upcoming feature film. "It is a true privilege to work with these athletes and to tell their stories. I believe they and "The Goal" will inspire everyone," said Rae.

"The Goal" has been submitted to several film festivals and is looking for distribution.
